A South African Police Clearance Certificate (often shortened to "SAPS clearance" or "PCC") is a formal document issued by the South African Police Service's Criminal Record Centre. It confirms — based on your fingerprints, which are the only reliable way to match an identity to South Africa's national criminal record database — whether you have a criminal record in South Africa. Most applicants request one because it's a document required by someone else: an immigration authority, an employer, a licensing body, or a foreign government processing a visa application.
It is not a South African-specific formality that only matters inside the country. Because the check is fingerprint-based and centrally run, it's accepted internationally as proof of South African criminal history — which is exactly why it turns up as a requirement in skilled migration, residency, and work visa applications for New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada and most other OECD countries.

How long is the certificate valid for?
SAPS doesn't print an expiry date on the certificate itself. In practice, the receiving authority — an immigration department, employer, or embassy — decides how recent they want it, and six to twelve months old is the most common requirement. Can I apply for a SAPS Police Clearance Certificate while living outside South Africa?
